What is a detox?
The word "detox" most often refers to cleansing the body of any toxins, and the term itself is derived from English. detoxication - detoxification, purification from toxic substances. Unfortunately, a clear understanding of what exactly is a detox does not exist and everyone is inclined to interpret the word in their own way.
In practice, having the phrase detox on a product can mean completely different things. If this is tea, then it will most likely have a diuretic effect, dietary supplements in tablets — mild laxatives, face masks — cleansing and antibacterial properties similar to mud masks.
Smoothies with a detox effect are most often based on the addition of chia seeds or other sources of natural fiber .
Is detox good for your health?
On the one hand, modern medicine refutes the idea that vegetable juices or over-the-counter dietary supplements can rid the body of toxins and toxins. Various manufacturers use a low level of knowledge, selling completely inadequate products (“detox soap”) under the detox label.
On the other hand, the source of information about detox - ancient Indian teachings - does not say at all that cleansing the body consists in drinking a glass of juice and spreading a mud mask on the face. The emphasis is on a complex combination of yoga, breathing exercises and a special diet suitable for you.
Where did detox come from?
The idea that the body needs to be cleaned of toxins comes from yoga and traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda). According to this teaching, undigested food and "undigested" emotions remain in the body, becoming sources of various inflammations and provoking diseases.
In order for the energy of life to circulate freely and unhindered in the human body, Ayurveda recommends regular yoga classes and a vegetarian diet. In some cases, fasting days on vegetable juices are recommended - this is where the concept of “detox” originates.
Detox in Ayurveda
According to the teachings of yoga, not completely digested food provokes a number of unpleasant symptoms - starting from bloating and heartburn, ending with skin problems (various acne and redness), back pain (an abnormally working stomach "hurts" the back) and even cancer.
To normalize the metabolism, it is recommended that you follow a vegetarian diet, rejection of sweets, alcohol and nicotine. In addition, medicinal plants (primarily aloe), herbal teas (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger), as well as juices of green vegetables taken on an empty stomach can help.
Positive effect on the body
The ability to control stress through yoga and getting rid of toxins and toxins accumulated in the body through a healthy diet and regular fasting has a positive effect not only on metabolism, but also on the body’s ability to fight various diseases.
However, if you ignore the part associated with yoga, observing a vegetarian diet and other “nonsense”, focusing on taking the advertised detox pills with aloe and bright detox smoothies with goji berries, you will not get any recovery of body or spirit.
The first thing home detox starts with is spending an unloading day at least once a month. If you regularly feel heaviness in the stomach, nausea and burning, learn to give your body an opportunity for respite and recovery - give up any solid food for 24 hours or start practicing interval fasting .
After you have successfully spent several days off water and sugar-free herbal teas (chamomile, ginger, cardamom, fennel, basil), move on to light vegetable juices. Preference is given to local green vegetables (cucumbers and cabbage), rather than sweet exotic fruits.
It is important to remember that even a banal diuretic detox tea, bought in a regular store, can have a number of contraindications. If the composition of this tea includes the cassia (senna) plant, then it is strictly prohibited in the presence of stomach ulcers and a number of other diseases, since it can cause bleeding.
Choose only those teas and dietary supplements that contain information on the composition of the product on the package and be sure to check every unfamiliar ingredient. The fact that these drugs are sold without a doctor’s prescription does not at all guarantee that it is impossible to harm their health.
Despite the fact that detox teas and detox juices alone are not able to rid the body of toxins, regular cleansing of the body through fasting and the use of herbs, as well as the ability to control stress levels through yoga are important ways to maintain health and prolong youth.
