The food industry has been actively using palm oil for decades. The product, successfully used for the manufacture of food, baby formula and cosmetics, has spread throughout the world and is one of the most sought after. Palm tree fruit oil makes up 1/3 of the world production of vegetable oils and is the cheapest in view of the fact that for the production of this oil you need to use 7 times less land and plantations than to get sunflower oil and 9 times more profitable than soybean .
It's important to know! That palm oil is used as raw material in food production and the vast majority of companies use it in their production technology, for example, Nestle buys 420 tons per year.
But despite all the advantages of accessibility and extensive use, palm oil has not only advantages, but also disadvantages. The main one is the negative effect on the body, and the health of consumers, let's understand if there is a benefit or only harm?
What is palm oil?
Palm oil is made from fruits and seeds of a palm tree (Elaeis guineensis). Trees for oil production grow in Africa and South America. Despite its plant origin, the composition of the oil is closer to animal fat. It contains saturated palmitic acid, carotene, vitamin E, coenzyme Q 10 and antioxidants.
It's important to know! Since palm oil has been the absolute leader in the production of vegetable oils in the world since 2016, no other oil is produced in such quantities as it is.
There are 2 types of palm oil used for production:
Technical oil is extracted from the fruit of a tree. It is used in the manufacture of cosmetics and cleaning products, for the manufacture of soap, candles, coating plates and biological fuels. This oil contains less saturated fat, and therefore is not suitable for the food industry.
Edible oil is extracted from the seeds of the fleshy part of the fruits of the oil palm. In addition to high fat content, such an oil product has high refractoriness. All this allows you to use it for the manufacture of food products. Palm oil is often added to ice cream, pastries, margarine, and chocolate products.
To extract oil, the fruits of the palm tree soften, their flesh stands out. Then oil is squeezed out of the desired part, which undergoes subsequent cleaning. With a high carotene content, the resulting oil will have a noticeable yellow color. The extract, which undergoes thorough processing, turns out to be transparent in liquid form and white in solidified.
It's important to know! This oil is devoid of almost all nutrients.
The benefits of palm oil
Despite the cleaning process, palm oil retains a number of beneficial properties for internal and external organs of the body.
Palm oil has a good effect on:
- bone structure due to vitamin E content;
- general immunity, as it also contains vitamins A and D;
- cardiovascular system, because it contains tocotrienols;
- cholesterol level and blood circulation;
- nervous system due to the sufficient content of antioxidants.
It's important to know! That palm oil is superior to all vegetable oils and even fish oil in terms of Vitamin E and the number of tocotrienolones.
Oil is also good for healthy skin and hair. The content of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants protects and restores the structure of cells. In addition, the carotene contained in the oil protects the skin from sunlight, along with sunscreen marking SPF15.
Palm oil harm
Palm oil belongs to the category of trans fats, which are poorly absorbed by the human body. As a result of insufficient processing, most trans fats are deposited in various parts of the body, including internal organs. This contributes to obesity, as well as clogging of the internal pores. Unreduced oil fats settle in the form of toxins and create a greasy coating on the intestines, stomach, blood vessels, complicating their work in the usual rhythm.
Often, prolonged use of palm oil causes:
- heart disease
- liver disease.
Why is there a negative attitude to the use of palm oil in Russia?
The thing is that this oil has several degrees of purification, but our laws do not regulate which oil is allowed to be imported into the country and, moreover, used in the food industry. Thus, part of unscrupulous importers, under the guise of a good product, are importing, to put it mildly, not very high-quality goods.
This is how gaps in the laws and greed of some people can form a negative opinion for many years.
Now it’s hard to say when this situation will change, because in the same Europe, USA and even African countries, oil is used without problems everywhere, and no one sees this as a big problem, simply because there is a regulation and requirements for oils.
What conclusions can be drawn about the dangers and benefits of palm oil
Do not use palm oil in an amount of more than 10% of the daily rate of fat.
Although it is completely impossible to exclude palm tree oil from the diet, since it is part of most foods, its use can be minimized. To reduce the amount of vegetable fat consumed, you should refuse or reduce the consumption of margarine, purchased dough products, chocolate, various chocolate and nut pastes.
